MUTEK.ES EXPANDS IN 2020 WITH ACTIVITIES IN BARCELONA, MADRID AND LONDON
The 11th edition of MUTEK Barcelona confirms its first wave of artists headed by Special Request, Loraine Janes, Levon Vincent, Lucinda Chua and Tomoko Sauvage.
After a decade of consolidation in Barcelona, 2020 marks a new era for MUTEKES. The European headquarters of the International Digital Creativity Platform of Montreal, extends its programming beyond the dates of the festival that will take place from March 4 to 7, presenting several multidisciplinary events held in different areas of the city. After the success of last year´s partnership with Roca, MUTEK.ES expands the activities in Barcelona, Madrid and London, promoted by Roca Gallery, the platform for disseminating knowledge and innovative ideas related to the architecture and design sector.
This first wave of artists, highlights debuts in Barcelona, world premieres and unusual projects promoted by different institutional organizations:

MUTEK Barcelona is thrilled to present the world premieres of UK artist Paul Woolford, under his aka Special Request, and Levon Vincent, both performing live for the first time on stage. This year’s program features breakthrough artist who have shined with their albums or live performances, unique and original projects, such as Loraine James, presenting “For You And I” (Hyperdub 2019), already ranked as Best Album of the Year by specialized media; Lucinda Chua, collaborator of FKA Twigs band and who recently launched her solo project; Sherelle known for her high-speed rhythms and low frequencies; or Tomoko Sauvage with her unique work of underwater resonances.
MUTEK.ES x Roca Gallery:
Barcelona, Madrid, London
After the success of 2019, Roca and MUTEKES strengthen their partnership by presenting the global cycle of 3 events in Barcelona, Madrid and London: Sculpted with Light & Sound. The series explores how the limits and material possibilities of sound and light not only condition our perception of space, but also create spaces.
Receiving MUTEKES for the first time in Madrid, Roca Madrid Gallery presents, from February 19 to 22, an A/V piece created site-specific by Alba G. Corral in real-time generative code, within the frame of the Madrid Design Festival. Roca Barcelona Gallery hosts Nicolas Bernier´s Frequencies (light quanta) installation as part of the festival’s inaugural event in March. The series is completed with a talk-presentation of Nonotak‘s work at Roca London Gallery in April.
MENTORING AND PERFORMANCE PROGRAMS
#WeAreEquals Music Academy + “MUSE, A New Wave in the Mediterranean¨
Maintaining the global commitment of the MUTEK international network to promoteand create synergies withprojects focused on diversity, gender equality and empowerment in the creative industry, in 2020 MUTEKES puts special emphasis on fostering spaces for artistic and professional formation, through different seminars and artistic residencies that will have their point of exhibition within the frame of the festival in March. Supporting this mandate, the #WeAreEquals and “MUSE, A New Wave in the Mediterranean” projects join the festival.
#WeAreEquals, the British Council platform for gender equality and diversity in the music industry, will hold its Music Academy on February 21 and 22 at Bridge_48 (BCN). The selected producers and sound artists, «Equalers», will receive a training program organized by Brighter Sound and by both British and Spanish mentors, which will provide both contact networks and practical tools for them to become future leaders in the sector. The most prominent will also have the opportunity to present their projects at the festival.
“MUSE, A New Wave in the Mediterranean”, is a platform designed by the Consul General of Italy in Barcelona, Gaia Danese, and curated by Anna Mastrolitto (She’s in Control), which aims to support the talent of women in the cultural and experimental, and is part of the ITmakES project launched by the Italian Embassy in Madrid and the Italian Consulate General in Barcelona.
The Mediterranean and European dimension of the MUSE platform has a strong mandate in promoting institutional collaboration, in that line, and as part of MUTEK Barcelona, the Consulate General of Italy in Barcelona, Consulate General of Portugal in Barcelona with the Camões Institute, Institut Français, British Council and the Consulate of Japan in Barcelona are all supporting this cooperation project with a vast selection of creators such as the Italians Tadleeh and Grand River; Lucinda Chua from UK; Bleid from Portugal; and Tomoko Sauvage from Japan/France.
MUSE will also actively participate in the #WeAreEquals Music Academy with the presentation and performance of Costanza Francavilla, an artist who explores the positive impact of Theta Waves, associated with deep relaxation, meditation, creativity and intuitive awareness.
MUSE project has already promoted the participation of artists in festivals and events such as Volumens (Valencia), Enso (Alicante) or Tupper (Barcelona).
FRANCESCO TRISTANO: THE RIG SESSIONS + SOIRÉE MUTEKES @ ABX10
The activities continue at Casa MUTEK (Bridge_48), on December 18 with Falcon Muse Creative and MUTEKES presenting a new cycle curated by the pianist and composer, Francesco Tristano. In this first event, Tristano and the Argentine artist Guti, perform live with their collaborative project, Another Paradise. The event will be very limited capacity (100pax), tickets will go on sale through the festival networks.
The renewed room ABX10 joins as a space for the annual Soirée MUTEKES cycle, in which its premiere is already confirmed on January 11 with the French artist Malibu, and on February 22 with the closing party of the #WeAreEquals Music Academy. It will also be a meeting point (Pre-Nocturne) with performances within the framework of the festival, with more dates to announce.
